Akhirnya.. setelah Mama sempat up and down hampir 2 bulan ini.. rutinitas kita bisa mulai lebih ‘normal’.

Kali ini kita sampai unit Octopus, karakter yang ingin kita pelajari: Even the octopus praises the Lord.

Kita belajar tentang gurita si kaki delapan. Wah, baru tau kalo gurita itu salah satu makhluk air yang tinggi IQ-nya. Mungkin hal ini dilihat dari caranya ‘menipu’ mangsa.

Cara membuatnya mudah sekali, buat outline dari empat jari kita (kecuali jempol), lalu geser keempat jari itu, sambungkan supaya membentuk delapan kaki gurita. Setelah itu tinggal buat kepala gurita. Warnai dan gunting. Kira-kira gurita Joel yang mana?

Minggu lalu ada surat dari kantor pos. Aku harus mengambil paket dan di situ tertera, biaya total Rp 69ribu-an dengan bea masuk 63ribu-an sisanya biaya bungkus dan admin.

Coba mengingat-ingat.. aku order apa sih, ampe kena biaya semahal ini? Kalo ga salah untuk barang di bawah 50US$ bebas fee. Soalnya dulu pernah pesen kurikulum dari US yang lebih dari 130US$ dan untuk ini aku cuma bayar 7rb.

Akhirnya, Sabtu lalu kita pergi deh ke Kantor Pos Tangerang. Ternyata itu kiriman kurikulum matematika Math-U-See dari Singapore yang harganya jauh di bawah kurikulum dari US.

Kenapa bisa begitu ya? Apa karena yang dari Singapore ini dituliskan secara detil tentang valuenya dan keterangannya adalah commercial sample + DVD (educational) sementara yang dari US hanya diberikan keterangan educational material?

Bingung…

I (the Mom) am struggling and adjusting with my new life. Homeschooling with a new baby is sooo challenging. After twice or third trial, I gave up our scheduled HS routine - 10am in the morning with MFW-K and switched to child-led method. I am just trying to be realistic what we can achieve at this time.

I have to devote so much time to baby Chloe (7 weeks) during the day. Changing diapers every now and then, nursing every two or three hours (not to mention when the growth spurts happened), soothing the baby, and so on. My life is so unbalanced right now, I’m trying so hard to maintain every child’s routine. And I feel that Joel (or me) miss our HS routine. He kept asking, “Mom, let’s do school.” I don’t want Joel to be ‘left behind’, because I am focusing so much of my attention on baby Chloe.

But, thank God, the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the gift of freedom.

All we have to do is adjusting everything to our own family style. School environment at home just not for us. When I was feeding the baby, we all cuddled up on the bed and Joel would read a story for us. When I took the baby for a walk, we’d talk about the cars we met. Joel was learning to tell the area where a car registered from its license plate number. Joel also found his new interest on computer. Google Images, interactive learning CDs are his new friend, and he could take up to almost 2 hours playing with them. Pipo is one of his all-time favorite.

In short, we are (striving) continued living and learning, just like before. I just wish I could be more disciplined (and rise earlier!).

Pertanyaan ini pernah diajukan Joel berbulan-bulan lalu waktu sedang saya mandikan. (Haduh.. pertanyaan aneh apa lagi ini). Terus terang, saya tidak bisa menjawabnya :((

Saya dah google site-site tentang anatomi tubuh manusia, dari Wikipedia sampai site-site biologi/kesehatan. Tentu saja di site-site serius ini jawabannya juga sangat serius. Tidak mungkin kan saya menjawab Joel seperti ini:

“The underarm (or axilla) is the area on the human body directly under the joint where the arm connects to the shoulder. Karena tidak ketemu jawaban sederhana, dan saya sendiri kurang tahu pasti guna ketiak manusia, saya diamkan saja. Hari berlalu.. sampai tadi sore… Joel bertanya lagi, “Ketek itu buat apa sih, Ma?”

Karena dah kehabisan akal dan mati gaya (hehehe), saya jawab, “Nanti kita dokter Eric aja ya…” Dokter Eric adalah dokter anak yang biasa kami kunjungi. Kali ini Joel setuju dan tidak memperpanjang pertanyaannya.

Tapi.. toh saya penasaran juga. Saya baca-baca lagi artikel di Wikipedia dan kali ini ada kalimat yang sekarang kok jadi catchy banget.

Saya: “Ketek itu gunanya buat taroh termometer supaya tahu suhu tubuh kita, panas atau enggak.”
Joel: (terlihat berpikir sejenak, lalu tersenyum)”Buat taroh Autobild juga ya, Ma?”
Saya: (tercengang.. kok dia bisa kepikiran gitu ya) “Iya.. iya..”

penjelasan: Autobild adalah majalah otomotif kesukaan dia. Saya mengajarinya untuk mengepit majalah untuk mempermudahnya membawa majalah itu dari dia masih kecil. Soalnya setiap kali ada Autobild baru , majalah itu dibawanya ke mana-mana, sampai lecek dan tak berbentuk.

Joel sayang sama adiknya (syukurlah). Dulu waktu masih di perut Mama, sehari bisa puluhan kali Joel kiss dedeknya. Sekarang, setelah dia cukup berhasil menangani kecemburuannya, dia ga pernah absen kiss adiknya, di jidat, di pipi, di bibir, di tangan, di kaki. Joel suka gemes sama kaki Chloe yang kecil.

Nah, ada kisah lucu. Kemarin Joel dan Chloe dititipin ke Tanjung Duren, karena Mama harus kontrol 40 hari ke dokter kandungan. Kebetulan Opa Oma lagi datang dari Bangka.

Seperti biasa, Joel langsung menuju ke rak buku yang berisi koleksi lawas Autobild Papa (dulu kita tinggal di sini). Baca-baca sebentar, dia tanya Oma, “Manual itu apa sih? Matic itu apa?” Kemungkinan dia baca di halaman harga-harga mobil di majalah otomotif itu.

Oma: “Manual itu ada giginya, matic enggak.”
Joel: (mikir bentar) “Joel manual, dedek matic.”
Oma: (mikir bentar juga.. akhirnya nyambung juga)

Hahahaha. Joel.. Joel.. ada-ada saja.

Punya adik bayi tidak berarti Joel berhenti belajar. Walau Mama mengambil ‘cuti’ satu bulan, tapi ternyata Joel tak bisa berhenti belajar.

Ada satu pelajaran penting dengan punya adik ini. Joel belajar bagaimana berbagi Mama. Jelas sekali dia ’struggling’ di hari-hari pertama. Pasti rasanya tidak rela melihat Mama yang tadinya hampir selalu available 24 jam buat dia, sekarang harus dibagi dengan adik, yang menyusu hampir tiap tiga jam sekali, belum lagi kalau adiknya nangis, pipis, pup atau bosan… Joel belajar dan menurut kami dia cukup sukses menangani kecemburuannya.

Untuk pelajaran secara akademis…. awalnya dia sering menagih melanjutkan pelajarannya dengan MFW. Tapi karena rasanya mustahil bisa melakukannya, saya menyerah.. maklum saya masih belum terampil membagi diri untuk dua orang anak + satu asisten (baca: PRT) yang alih-alih membantu malah bikin tambah banyak pikiran.. hehehe. Untung Papa sangat membantu, dengan memandikan Chloe setiap pagi sebelum ngantor.

Lalu bagaimana?

Ternyata Joel bisa belajar sendiri. Menyalakan desktop PC, memasukkan password, connect ke internet lewat modem 3G, menyalakan browser firefox, masuk ke Google Images dan mencari gambar yang dia ingin lihat. Kegiatan ini dia sebut: ‘Lihat-lihat”

Awalnya google digunakannya untuk melihat landmark negara2 yang dia ketahui dari buku atlas Erlangganya. Lalu, dia mulai mencari segala sesuatu dengan Google! Termasuk tokoh-tokoh Alkitab yang dia kenal lewat buku ceritanya, misal: Anak perempuan Yairus, Rut, Yunus, dll. Hehehehe. Lalu jika Google menampilkan hasil yang beda dengan maunya dia, dia akan mengklaim bahwa Google salah Haduhhh…

@28 Mei 2008, just an hour and so after the midnight, we rushed to hospital. Mom’s water was broken. Together with sleepy-Joel, drove along the road to Pantai Indah Kapuk.

About eight hours, (5 hrs in the labor room), our new baby girl was saying hello to the world.

Jokebedh Chloe Adiwijaya (baby Chloe) came around to cheer up our days. Joel has a sister now!

Sebagian besar dari kita tentunya sudah tidak asing dengan dongeng-dongeng binatang seperti kura-kura yang mengalahkan kelinci di lomba lari, belalang yang malas, kura-kura yang diterbangkan bangau, angin utara dan matahari, dll.

Nah, dongeng-dongeng ini konon dituturkan oleh Aesop pronunciation (tulisan aslinya: Æsop), seorang budak yang hidup pada tahun 620–560 SM, jaman Yunani Kuno. *sumber dari Wikipedia*

Ciri khas dongeng-dongengnya adalah muatan moralnya. Mungkin dari sinilah muncul istilah: “Moral of the Story is….”. Pas googling, saya temukan blog berbahasa Indonesia yang menulis tentang Bapak Aesop ini: more about Aesop.

Dongeng-dongeng ini baik diceritakan kepada anak-anak, karena mereka bisa belajar tentang nilai-nilai kebaikan. Dengan catatan, sebagian cerita berlatar belakang mitologi Yunani, jadi jika hal ini menjadi pertimbangan, pilih-pilihlah ceritanya.

Beberapa waktu lalu saya mendownload teks-nya dari gutenberg. Lalu demi kenyamanan mata, kemudahan mencetak dan masalah ergonomis lainnya, saya pun menata kembali letaknya, kali ini pakai Microsoft Word saja, lalu dengan bantuan pdf converter seperti Primo PDF dijadikan sebuah file PDF.

Silakan jika ingin mendownload hasil kerja saya, harus dibuka dengan pdf reader (mis: Acrobat Reader). Ukurannya 2MB lebih. Demi menghindari pengkomersilan (padahal saya dapat teksnya gratis, saya bagi juga dengan gratis), maka saya membatasi akses file ini - tidak bisa copy-paste, hanya bisa diprint atau dibaca di monitor saja.

To today, I still keep my obsession of collecting HS curriculum provider catalog from all over the world.

View my collection. There’re ten printed catalogs in this picture, but actually I have 14 from 8 providers, not including from Bob Jones University which have been shipped a week ago from US.

The very first catalog I received is Sonlight. ABeka came after, and the last to arrive is from Winter Promise Publishing which I adore so much for its beautiful vintage (or classic?) design.

I’ve got 2 copies of ABeka’s, 3 of AOP’s, 5 of MFW’s and 1 copy for each of the rest. The most informative I found, was ABeka. 1st edition of Sonlight’s I got, left me confuse and dizzier as a HS beginner, but in the last edition they had redesign the way they present information, much-much better now.

There are four other catalogs more, from Laurel Springs, Griggs (Adventist/LDS), Australian Christian Academy (ACE schooling service from Austalia) and from Math-U-See. They’re just not available when picture was taken :).

Note: Math-U-See is a great math curriculum. I order this catalog directly from their representation in Australia, a very interesting demo CD was included.

Three units ago, we did some fun science projects with leaves. And what I love most from MFW is how they integrate Bible values in it, in science particularly! The topic of this lesson is: “I will live and grow in Jesus.”

I picked a leaf from some trees, one from each kind and let them dry. In a few days ahead, we observed that those leaves went shrink. We learnt that if a leaf leaves its tree, it will shrink-shrink-shrink. That’s going to be happened when we don’t live in Jesus, the Tree of life.

We had our lesson under a young rambutan tree. Rambutan is a tropical plant, its fruit has hairy skin, and vary in color, from burgundy, orange to lemon green.

Then, we made a book. Book of Leaves. Joel picked leaves by himself. Carefully (with little help from me) he traced the outline. After that, he colored inside the leaf outline and I helped him write down the name of each tree on the paper. There was a tree I don’t even know its name, shame on me - and I proudly call my self Indonesian, LOL. We call it Pohon Depan Rumah (front yard tree). Seemed that I have to get a set of indonesian plants encyclopedia when it’s possible.

And, this is our book. Nice, eh?
